A lipoma is a benign growth made of fatty tissue that usually develops under the skin, while a cyst is a fluid- or semi-solid–filled sac that can occur anywhere in the body. Although often harmless, lipomas and cysts may cause discomfort, infection, cosmetic concerns, or rapid growth. Lipoma and cyst surgery involves complete removal of the lump along with its capsule to prevent recurrence. The procedure is generally quick, safe, and performed under local or short anesthesia.
